Disable Hyperlinks

URLs and email addresses entered in Word often are converted to "live" hyperlinks, complete with blue text and underlining.

To disable a hyperlink:

  • Highlight the linked text.
  • Press Ctrl+6. (This is the number 6 on the regular keyboard, not the numeric keypad.)
  • Click away from the text to deselect it.

To disable the hyperlinks in an entire document:

  • Press Ctrl+A to select all text in the document.
  • Press Ctrl+6.
  • Click the mouse once to deselect all the text.  The hyperlinks will be removed, but all the regular underlined text will stay intact.

To keep Word from EVER creating automatic hyperlinks:

  • Under the Tools menu, choose Autocorrect.
  • Select the tab labeled AutoFormat As You Type, uncheck the box next to Internet and network paths with hyperlinks.
  • Do the same thing under the tab labeled AutoFormat.
  • Click OK.
