Windows - Adding or Changing File Associations

If, for some reason, a file type is no longer associated with its program, these are the steps to fix the problem:

  1. Launch Windows Explorer.
  2. From the View menu choose Options.
  3. Click on the File Types tab.

  1. Click the New Type button.
  2. Enter a general description under Description of Type (e.g., "FooCorp Word Processor File").
  3. Enter the extention you want to add under Associated Extension (e.g., "FOO").
  4. Press the New... button near the bottom of the dialog box.
  5. From the Action menu, select Open.
  6. Type in or browse to the pathname of the program that you want to open this type of file (e.g., "c:\program files\foo\bar.exe").
  7. Press OK.
  8. Highlight Openin the Actions list, then press Set Default.
  9. Click Close.
  10. Click Close.

From now on, the file should be opened by that program whenever you double-click on it.
