Windows PC - "MAC Address" and IP Number Information
The MAC address (Media Access Control) is a number in hexadecimal format that uniquely identifies every machine on a network. The IP number is campus assigned number in dotted decimal format that is used by other computers to locate your computer.
Finding your "Numbers" (wireless or desktop)
(This assumes you have already installed a wireless card for laptops. If not you must purchase one and install it before trying to find your MAC address. OR, that you already have a network card in your desktop.)
Finding your MAC address:
-
Bring up the Start menu and then click on the "Run..." icon.

-
In the new window that pops up, type "cmd" without the quotation marks, as shown below, and then click OK.

-
You should now see what is called the command-line interface. In this new window, type "ipconfig /all" without the quotation marks as in the circled area below. Note the line that says "Physical Address . . . :" and then has a string of 6 groups of 2 characters separated by dashes. Those 12 characters are your MAC address. It is important to get the MAC address from the section associated with your wireless Ethernet adapter and not another adapter. The IP number is shown at 144.89. . -- yours will probably be something like 134.123.1xx.xxx (where x is another digit.)

In this example, the MAC address is 000000000000. Your MAC address will be different.
