Information System Support

The college recognizes the need to provide students, faculty and staff with computer support. A crew of dedicated individuals make up the CEA Tech Support team. They are available a variety of hours and provide the following support:

End User Support: Provide in-place service for institutional desktop and laptop computer systems and peripherals. Provide installation and problem resolution support for CEA software packages and other applications as warranted.

Computer Clusters: Configure, manage, image, and maintain CEA computer clusters. These clusters are located within the college and residence halls. (Notable exceptions are ITS managed clusters within the college, i.e., Elhy cluster)

Distributed Support: Provide technology Point of Contact for the College of Engineering & Architecture for technology consultations and CEA liaison with other campus entities. Provide equipment maintenance and support for servers and distributed computing resources. Maintain college Active Directory resources.

Residence Halls: Provide LIMITED support to connect student-owned systems to the campus network. (Diagnostics to discover more advanced problems and the solutions available will be handled as warranted.)

Problem Resolution Steps

The first step in resolving any computer problem is to do a complete restart of the system. This means shutting down all applications and powering off the computer. After the computer has been powered down for a minute or two turn it back on and see if the problem still exists. (NOTE: A complete power off is prefered to simply pressing the reset button.)

If the problem remains you should contact CEA Tech Support. A link on the menu to the left is labeled CEA Tech Support Web Form and just below that is the Software Install Request form. Both are the prefered method for initiating repairs to college hardware or software.

If the problem is outside of the college then the campus ITS will have to be contacted. You may wish to contact the campus Help Desk at 1-8685, by email help.desk@ndsu.nodak.edu, or by web at http://www.helpcenter.nodak.edu/helpdesk. (The Help Desk will usually need to be contacted on most issues involving email.)

You should have some basic information at hand and be prepared to give it to CEA Tech Support or the Help Desk. Your name, contact number, location, computer name and ID number (the little green tag) will be helpful. The operating system, errant application and any other useful information will also be appreciated.
